END HARDSHIP PROTEST: A Thunderous Call for Urgent and Meaningful Action

0

The recently concluded ten-day nationwide End Hardship protest has left an indelible mark, bringing to light the pervasive and debilitating suffering of Nigerians. Despite the collective outcry, hardship continues to thrive, fueled by soaring inflation, economic stagnation, and the government’s inexplicable inaction.

The intense discussions leading up to the protest sent a clear message to the government. Yet, astonishingly, the presidency remained silent, detached, and indifferent—even as the demonstrations escalated into violence in the North.

The President’s national address was devoid of tangible solutions, concrete plans, and meaningful commitments, instead focusing on self-congratulatory remarks and empty rhetoric. This lack of response not only deepens the nation’s woes but also erodes public trust and fuels frustration.

The removal of fuel subsidies has sparked fierce debates and widespread discontent. While some, including myself, advocate for its reinstatement, others propose alternative solutions such as gradual removal, targeted palliatives, and comprehensive reforms. However, if the subsidy must be removed, we must prioritize:

  1. Developing Alternative Transportation Systems: Reduce dependence on petroleum products by investing in alternative transportation options.
  2. Resolving Electricity Challenges: Invest in renewable energy sources and ensure a stable power supply to alleviate economic pressure.
  3. Declaring a State of Emergency on Federal Roads: Invest in infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient transportation nationwide.

Regrettably, the protest ended without concrete actions or meaningful commitments from the presidency. A standard post-protest approach should involve exploring solutions, engaging stakeholders, implementing reforms, addressing concerns, and restoring hope. Instead, the government’s cluelessness persists, leaving Nigerians bewildered, frustrated, and disillusioned.

The arbitrary arrest and detention of protesters in police facilities nationwide is unacceptable, unjustifiable, and unconstitutional. These individuals exercised their fundamental rights, demanding better governance, accountability, and responsiveness.

We must demand more from our leaders, expecting:

  • Economic Revitalization
  • Inflation Control
  • Employment Opportunities
  • Infrastructure Development
  • Social Welfare Programs
  • Accountability and Transparency

Failure to address these demands may lead to unpredictable consequences, as unaddressed concerns continue to simmer, threatening to push the nation toward chaos.

For the sake of God, humanity, and country, I urge the government to:

  • Listen to the People
  • Act Decisively
  • Restore Hope
  • Revitalize the Economy
  • Address Hardships
  • Ensure Justice and Equity
