Promise Okon, a 17-year-old minor, has described how her husband Benedict Anieze smashed their four-week-old baby to death at their home in Lagos’ Idimu neighbourhood.

It was discovered that the couple had an argument that escalated to the point where he threw his infant on the floor, shattering her head in the process.

“The incident occurred at our apartment at No 5 pipeline Road, Idimu, when my husband threw our one-month-old baby girl on the floor during a misunderstanding,” Promise Okon said.

“She died instantly, and he set fire to our apartment right away.” The fire was put out, thanks to the help of neighbours,” she continued.

Okon would have been burnt  to death if it hadn’t been for the quick action of their neighbours, who rescued her and put out the fire.

She was still recovering from the caesarean section she had a month ago while delivering her baby.

The incident was reported to the Idimu Police Division, which detained the culprit right away.

When questioned by authorities, the suspect claimed that an evil spirit possessed him and drove him to commit the crime.

A spokesman for the Lagos State Police, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the occurrence, saying that the investigation is underway and that the command is considering it as a case of murder and arson.

“The suspect has been apprehended and will be transferred on Tuesday to the State Criminal and Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba.”
