The latest news in Nigeria today is that May Agbamuche Mbu (Delta, South-South) has been reappointed as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mbu was appointed by the President on Tuesday to replace Lauretta Onochie, his Assistant on Social Media, whose nomination had previously been rejected by the Senate.

Senator Kabir Gaya of the Senate Committee on (INEC), who said her nomination violated Federal Character principles, recommended that the presidential aide be rejected.

The Senate has rejected Lauretta Onochie’s nomination as Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Kabir Gaya cited Section 14 (1) 3 of the Constitution, claiming that someone from her zone had already been appointed as a Commissioner and that the law was clear on this. According to the committee, a commissioner from Delta state, where Onochie is from, is currently serving.

Buhari urged the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, to confirm the nominees in a letter dated December 10, 2021, and forwarded to him.

Onochie’s nomination as commissioner of the electoral body in October sparked outrage, with political parties calling for her dismissal, claiming she was too partisan to serve in such a sensitive position.

Onochie was also accused of belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
