The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, has dismissed reports suggesting he could emerge as a vice-presidential candidate in the 2027 general election.

The cleric clarified his position during an appearance on The PAP Show, where he addressed speculation linking him with a possible role as running mate to President Bola Tinubu. Ejes Gist News reports that Kukah stated unequivocally that he has no intention of contesting for political office or serving as vice president to anyone.

Bishop Kukah Rejects VP Speculation

Speaking on the programme, Kukah said he remains fully committed to his vocation as a Catholic priest and has no plan to abandon his religious calling for partisan politics.

He dismissed the suggestion of becoming a running mate, describing it as inconsistent with his life’s mission and spiritual obligations.

“Do I look like somebody who can be running mate to anybody?” he asked during the interview.

‘Priesthood More Than Presidency’

Kukah stated that his priesthood holds greater significance for him than any political position, including the presidency.

According to him, the spiritual responsibility he carries as a servant of God outweighs any offer that could come from the political arena. He added that no political ticket could match the value of his clerical calling.

“I have something that is more than the presidency. My priesthood is more than anything you can offer. Tinubu cannot offer me a ticket,” Kukah said.

Commitment to Religious Mission

The Sokoto bishop further explained that he does not see himself participating in electoral politics, reiterating that his focus remains on pastoral duties and national moral engagement through the Church.

Kukah has been a prominent voice in national discourse, often speaking on governance, democracy and social justice. However, he made clear that his interventions in public affairs do not translate into political ambition.

There has been no official indication from the presidency or any political platform linking Kukah to a 2027 ticket, and his latest remarks appear to put to rest the speculation surrounding his potential involvement in electoral politics.
