Cadet’s death at Nigeria Police Academy sparks fresh controversies

In a tragic incident that has raised questions about the treatment of cadets and management at the Nigeria Police Academy (POLAC), the demise of A.S. Jika, a cadet from Adamawa, has ignited a storm of controversy and allegations of negligence.

Jika, the son of Senator Alhaji Haliru Jika and former chairman of the House of Representatives’ committee on police, passed away on the academy’s campus in Wudil, Kano State, on Saturday.

    Allegations of Negligence and Maltreatment

The circumstances surrounding Jika’s death have prompted outrage and accusations of negligence, particularly aimed at the academy’s medical staff. According to some cadets and staff members of POLAC who chose to remain anonymous, the tragic outcome could have been avoided if Jika had received timely and adequate medical attention.

They claim that cadets with health issues are reluctant to seek medical help at the academy’s clinic due to fears of dismissal or suspension. The alleged policy of dismissing cadets who seek medical care for minor health concerns creates an environment of secrecy and fear.

    Highhandedness of POLAC’s Commandant

The allegations extend beyond medical care. AIG Sadiq Idris Abubakar, the Commandant of POLAC, is accused of highhandedness in his administration of the academy. Cadets and staff members have pointed out several issues, including reduced food rations, the closure of the academy market, stopped allowances, and the dismissal of cadets for various reasons, including the use of phones.

    Unusual Dismissals and Strenuous Training

According to sources, the Commandant has dismissed a significant number of cadets, reportedly more than 150, since taking office less than a year ago. Cadets also allege being subjected to strenuous training, and any cadet found with water after such exercises faces expulsion.

Poor Conditions for Staff and Cadets

The allegations extend to the living conditions of both staff and cadets. Staff members claim that they have been sent out of academy accommodations, and any complaints about accommodations are met with responses suggesting individuals use their salaries for repairs.

    Official Response

POLAC authorities have released a statement stating that Jika passed away after a brief illness. They assert that he received medical attention and was discharged before being readmitted, but his condition worsened, leading to his untimely death. The Commandant expressed condolences to the family and loved ones of Cadet Sulaiman Jika.

This tragedy shines a spotlight on the treatment of cadets and the administration of the Nigeria Police Academy, sparking demands for transparency and accountability. The prediction came at a time when the naira’s performance in the foreign exchange markets had caused concern among Nigerians. In the first trading session of September, the naira’s exchange rate against the dollar at the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window segment closed at N740.38/$1. In other markets, the naira closed at N921/$1 in the P2P market and had similar rates in the black market.

Obasanjo Denies Approving $6 Billion Mambilla Power Contract, Ready to Testify in any Inquiry

I’m Ready to Testify”: Obasanjo Finally Speaks on $6bn Mambilla Power Contract

Abeokuta, Ogun State  – Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has broken his silence on the controversial $6 billion contract awarded to Sunrise Power and Transmission Ltd for the Mambilla Hydropower Project in 2003. In an interview excerpt published by TheCable, Obasanjo vehemently denied authorizing the contract and challenged the former Minister of Power and Steel, Olu Agunloye, to explain the source of his authority.

Obasanjo, who served as President of Nigeria, asserted that during his tenure, no minister had the authority to approve more than N25 million without explicit presidential consent. He emphasized that it was impossible for Agunloye to commit the government to a $6 billion project without his permission, stating unequivocally, “I did not give him any permission.”

The former president expressed his readiness to testify if a commission of inquiry, under the current Bola Tinubu-led government, is established to investigate the matter. He added, “If a commission of inquiry is set up today to investigate the matter, I am ready to testify. I do not even need to testify because all the records are there. I never approved it.”

Obasanjo also revealed his surprise at Agunloye’s presentation of a memo for the $6 billion contract despite being advised against it. He stated that had he known about it during his presidency, he would have dismissed the former minister from his position.

Furthermore, Obasanjo disclosed that Leno Adesanya, the promoter of Sunrise Power, fled Nigeria during his presidency, and he would have taken legal action against him if Adesanya had remained in the country.

The Mambilla Power contract has been the subject of legal disputes and arbitration between Sunrise Power and the Nigerian government. Sunrise Power has sought compensation of $2.3 billion for a contract breach and an additional $400 million as part of a settlement. Nigeria contests these claims, arguing that the contract was unlawfully awarded by Agunloye in 2003.

In a bid to resolve the arbitration, the federal government offered $200 million in compensation in 2020 to kickstart the Mambilla Hydropower Project, but the effort was reportedly halted due to insufficient funds.

In a turn of events that brings relief to N-power beneficiaries across the nation, Nasims, the managing body of the Npower program, has announced the reversal of altered beneficiary status to the original “BENEFICIARY” designation. This reversal comes after weeks of uncertainty and concern caused by an earlier update on the Nasims self-service portal that resulted in beneficiaries’ statuses being erroneously changed to “applicants.”

As of today, August 18th, 2023, Nasims officially confirmed that the N-power batch C beneficiaries’ status has been successfully updated back to “BENEFICIARY” on the npower program. Beneficiaries are encouraged to log in to the Nasims portal to verify their restored status and ensure the accuracy of their information.

In a related development, the Ministry responsible for overseeing the Npower program, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, welcomes Dr. Betta Edu as the newly appointed Minister. This leadership change is expected to inject new energy into the management of the Npower program, and there are hopes that the program will regain its former glory under her guidance.

This promising development also raises expectations for the long-awaited resolution of the issue of unpaid stipends for beneficiaries, which has been a concern for the past 8 months. With the reinstatement of beneficiary status, beneficiaries remain optimistic that their pending stipends will be cleared soon.

During the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on August 17th, 2023, in Abuja, several critical issues were discussed and addressed. The council received updates on the ongoing nationwide distribution of essential items, such as rice, grains, and fertilizer, to various states. This initiative, supported by a generous financial aid of N5 billion from the Federal Government, aims to provide assistance to citizens in need.

The council particularly commended the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for their vital contributions to these efforts. Moreover, the council acknowledged the interventions made by state governments to alleviate the suffering of citizens, especially vulnerable groups. It urged these governments to further amplify their distribution of palliatives, continuing their invaluable support to the most affected members of society.

As the Npower program makes strides towards reinstating the rightful status of its beneficiaries and addressing their concerns, the collaborative efforts of governmental agencies offer hope for a better future for all citizens.

Simon Ekpa Issues 12-Day Ultimatum to FG to Release Nnamdi Kanu and Seeks Other Demands

IPOB Faction Leader Simon Ekpa Issues Ultimatum to Nigerian Government Over Nnamdi Kanu’s Release.

Simon Ekpa, the leader of a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) known as “auto pilots,” has issued an ultimatum to the Nigerian federal government regarding the release of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu. He has warned of another three-week period of civil disobedience, including a daily curfew, if the government fails to meet his demand.

Ekpa’s ultimatum and threat were conveyed in a statement titled ‘Delegitimization of Nigeria within Biafra Territory.’ In this statement, he has set a deadline of September 15 for the federal government to release Nnamdi Kanu and other individuals held in Nigerian state custody.

Furthermore, Ekpa has demanded the dismantling of all roadblocks and checkpoints in the southeast region by the same September 15 deadline.

If these demands are not met, Ekpa has indicated that the people will engage in another three weeks of civil disobedience, which includes the enforcement of a curfew. During this period, all Nigerian government secretariats within Biafra territory, across all states, must remain closed, according to his statement.

It’s worth noting that Simon Ekpa’s previous sit-at-home declaration last month did not gain widespread support in the southeast states, largely due to a letter purportedly written by Nnamdi Kanu. In the letter, Kanu expressed concerns that the sit-at-home actions were adversely affecting the region’s economy.

Initially, IPOB had called for weekly sit-at-home protests in 2021 as part of their demands for Nnamdi Kanu’s release. However, despite IPOB’s official cancellation of the sit-at-home order, Ekpa’s faction has continued to issue such directives, leading to ongoing tensions and divisions within the group.

Nnamdi Kanu is currently in detention by the Department of State Services (DSS) on charges of treason, leading a proscribed group, and breaching bail conditions, making his release a significant point of contention within IPOB.

PDP Sweeps All 18 Local Government Areas in Edo State Local Government Election.

In a resounding victory, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has secured triumph in all 18 Local Government Areas of Edo State in the recently held local government election. The State Independent Electoral Commission officially released the election results, highlighting the PDP’s dominance across the region.

The election, conducted on a Saturday, encompassed all 18 local government areas of Edo State, spanning the Edo North, Edo Central, and Edo South senatorial districts. The comprehensive win for the PDP underscores the party’s strong presence and support among the electorate.

While the PDP emerged victorious, it’s important to note that other major political parties, such as the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Labour Party (LP), actively participated in the election. However, the PDP’s sweeping victory underscores a significant mandate from the people of Edo State in this local government election.

This outcome in Edo State’s local government election is expected to have implications for the state’s political landscape and may set the tone for future political developments in the region. The PDP’s success in all 18 Local Government Areas sends a clear message about the party’s popularity and support among the residents of Edo State.

In a recent interview with Daily Trust, former Minister of Petroleum, Umaru Dembo, has voiced concerns about the readiness of President Bola Tinubu’s government, as well as the state of governance across the country. Dembo expressed his perplexity over the extended delay in forming President Tinubu’s cabinet, emphasizing that this delay raises questions about the government’s ability to manage the country efficiently. He pointed out that the President should have assembled his ministers within 60 days of taking office, but this timeline has not been met.

Furthermore, Dembo questioned the government’s overall readiness and vision, particularly for the next six months. He remarked that many individuals who aspire to positions like President and Governor often pursue these roles without adequate preparation for governance. He highlighted the importance of not just seeking power but also having a clear plan for governing effectively.

Dembo’s concerns also extended to governance at the state and local levels, emphasizing that readiness and effective leadership are lacking across the board. He called attention to the need for a comprehensive strategy to control the country, manage its affairs, instill discipline, and promote economic empowerment in various sectors.

Umaru Dembo’s remarks shed light on the challenges and expectations surrounding President Tinubu’s administration and governance in Nigeria as a whole. The comments serve as a reminder of the importance of thorough preparation and vision in leadership, especially at a time when the nation faces various complex issues.

How 100-level Cadet Died Over Staff Negligence At Ill-Equipped Nigerian Police Academy Clinic

Nigerian Police Academy Faces Backlash Over Cadet’s Death and Deplorable Conditions.

The Nigerian Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State, finds itself at the center of controversy following the tragic death of a 100-level cadet, identified as A.S. Jika. The demise of this young student has raised serious concerns about the academy’s healthcare services and the overall conditions faced by cadets.

A.S. Jika, a Department of Sociology student, passed away on a fateful Saturday within the institution’s medical center. Notably, he was the son of Alhaji Haliru Jika, a former House of Representatives committee chairman of police and a current senator, adding a significant dimension to this tragedy.

According to a classmate of the deceased who chose to remain anonymous, negligence on the part of staff at the police training school played a critical role in Jika’s untimely demise. It is believed that timely intervention by healthcare personnel could have saved his life, as he battled what was initially described as “malaria sickness.”

The anonymous source revealed that students and staff alike had been voicing their frustrations regarding the services provided at the academy clinic. This frustration culminated in a devastating loss. We just lost a cadet today due to malaria at the police academy. The boy has been in the clinic for 3 days without receiving treatment until he died today,” the source lamented.

Cadets also expressed their dissatisfaction with the state of the clinic and the lack of proper medical care. One 400-level cadet highlighted the severity of the situation, stating, “Yes, we do complain. If we go to the clinic, the highest drug they give us is Paracetamol. How can they give paracetamol for pneumonia? A cadet will go there sometimes, and they’ll chase us back. We really need intervention, please.”

Additionally, concerns about the overall living conditions at the Nigerian Police Academy have been raised. Cadets report that the deplorable state of their hostels has become a hindrance to their studies, impacting their academic activities negatively. They emphasize the urgent need for improvements to create a conducive learning environment.

The Nigeria Police Academy, established in 1988, was designed to produce highly reformed and skilled police officers capable of addressing the challenges of modern policing. However, the recent incident and ongoing issues with healthcare and living conditions raise questions about the institution’s ability to fulfill this mission effectively.

It is crucial that authorities take swift action to investigate the circumstances surrounding A.S. Jika’s death and address the concerns of cadets regarding healthcare services and living conditions. The tragic loss of a young cadet highlights the need for immediate reforms to ensure the safety and well-being of those entrusted to the Nigerian Police Academy.

Fact Check: Nigerian Man’s Claim of Receiving N36m from Twitter Ads Revenue Sharing

Nigerian Man’s Claim of Receiving N36m from Twitter Ads Revenue Sharing, false.

A recent news article published by Punch Newspaper has claimed that a Nigerian user, Logik, celebrated receiving a substantial payment of N36,858,567 from Twitter through the ads revenue sharing program introduced by owner Elon Musk. The story also mentioned other users receiving payments as part of this program. However, a fact-check investigation reveals that this claim is false and raises questions about the accuracy of Punch Newspaper’s reporting.

Claim: Nigerian user Logik received N36,858,567 from Twitter’s ads revenue sharing program.

    Fact Check:

Verification of User Eligibility: A fact check on the verified Twitter account of @iamlogikk raises significant doubts about the user’s eligibility for Twitter’s revenue-sharing program, which is now known as “X.” The user’s follower count and post impressions are mentioned as key factors in eligibility. Even if Logik were eligible, it is highly improbable that he could earn such a substantial amount, as his follower count does not exceed 100,000. Users must have at least 5M impressions on their posts within the last 3 months.

Dubious Claims: The reported payment amount of N36,858,567 appears highly exaggerated, especially given the user’s supposed follower count. Such a payment would be unprecedented for a user with relatively limited reach on the platform.

    Conclusion:

In light of these findings, it is clear that the story published by Punch Newspaper about Logik receiving N36,858,567 from Twitter’s ads revenue sharing program is false and should not be trusted as accurate news.

Punch Newspaper’s publication of this story without adequate verification highlights the importance of responsible journalism and fact-checking in the era of digital media.

The public should exercise caution when encountering sensational claims and always seek reliable sources for accurate information
