“Official window records N7.65tn foreign exchange transactions in 2 months”

The value of foreign exchange transacted in the Investors’ and Exporters’ window witnessed a significant increase of 65.79% between May and June 2023, according to data from the FMDQ Exchange, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and authorized dealers. In June alone, N4.77 trillion ($7.72 billion) worth of foreign exchange was traded, marking a rise of N1.89 trillion ($1.51 billion) compared to the N2.87 trillion ($6.21 billion) traded in May. The total foreign exchange transactions for the two months reached N7.65 trillion or $13.94 billion.

This surge in forex transactions followed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to review the foreign exchange market to enhance liquidity. He assured foreign investors of measures to address forex scarcity and multiple rates that hindered earnings repatriation. Consequently, the governor of the CBN was suspended, and the Investors’ and Exporters’ window moved to a unified exchange rate.

Despite the liquidity increase due to the monetary policy review, the single exchange rate in the I&E window has been rising. As of Thursday, the naira to dollar rate stood at N768.60/$1, compared to N664.04/$1 on June 14, 2023, when the naira was devalued by the CBN. Additionally, foreign reserves declined to a two-year low of $33.94 billion as of July 25, down from $35.14 billion reported on May 26.

In June, the total Foreign Exchange Derivatives amounted to N3.91 trillion ($6.34 billion), showing growth from N2.40 trillion ($5.19 billion) in May.

    • Economic factors: The state of the Nigerian economy and the US economy can also affect the exchange rate. For example, if the Nigerian economy is doing well, the naira will be more valuable. Conversely, if the Nigerian economy is doing poorly, the naira will be less valuable.
    • Political factors: Political instability in Nigeria or the US can also affect the exchange rate. For example, if there is a coup in Nigeria, the naira will likely lose value.

Airtel Nigeria Reports Impressive Q2 2023 Revenue of $530 Million Amid Data and Voice Growth.

Airtel Nigeria, a leading telecommunications provider, showcased strong performance in the second quarter of 2023, achieving a remarkable revenue of $530 million from its mobile services in the country. This significant growth in revenue was primarily attributed to the increased turnover in both data and voice services.

According to the company’s financial statements, Airtel Nigeria experienced a noteworthy 23% rise in revenue compared to the same period in 2022 when it reported $517 million. While voice revenue saw a slight decline from $259 million in April to June 2022 to $254 million during the same months in 2023, data revenue surged impressively, reaching $230 million in the review period, surpassing the $210 million generated from internet users in Nigeria in the corresponding period last year.

Airtel Africa, the parent company, also witnessed positive growth, with its total revenue rising by 9.6% based on reported currency change, reaching $1.37 billion during the same quarter. This outperformed the $1.25 billion generated in the second quarter of the previous year.

Read Also Be patient, I understand your pain – Tinubu begs Nigerian

Breaking down the figures further, Airtel Africa’s voice services contributed significantly to its revenue, generating $621 million during the quarter, surpassing the $610 million reported in the same period the previous year. The data services segment also showed strong growth, generating $486 million in the quarter ending June 2023, up from the $418 million earned in the second quarter of 2022.

However, despite the impressive performance, Airtel Africa faced a challenge due to the naira devaluation in Nigeria, resulting in a $151 million loss after tax. The company disclosed that a foreign exchange loss of $471 million was recorded in finance cost before tax, with an additional $317 million impact after tax, specifically attributed to the devaluation of the Nigerian naira in June 2023. This loss has been categorized as a non-operating exceptional item.

Despite the setback caused by the devaluation, Airtel Nigeria’s positive revenue growth and robust performance in data and voice services remain noteworthy factors in the telecommunications industry.

Nigerians are not respected abroad due to the kind of ‘characters’ leading us, according to Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, claims that international communities are not respecting Nigeria because of the “characters” in power.

Mr Obi said he had a similar experience where he was disrespected in another country for being a Nigerian, citing how independent journalist David Hundeyin was recently denied entry into Zimbabwe.

Mr Obi emphasised that for Nigerians to gain international respect, political leaders must be committed to good governance and citizen respect.

Shock as Tinubu appoints ex-FRC secretary fired for corruption, convicted of sexual assault to probe CBN, other agencies

Tinubu appoints ex-FRC secretary fired for corruption, convicted of sexual assault to probe CBN, other agencies

President Bola Tinubu has appointed a man who was fired by his predecessor amid multiple allegations of corruption, abuse of office, federal racketeering, and sexual harassment to lead an investigation into the Central Bank of Nigeria and other federal agencies.

According to a July 28 letter signed by the president for the new appointee, Jim Osayande Obazee has been tapped as a special investigator with the mandate to uncover vast corruption at the nation’s main banker and other institutions suspected of entrenching a culture of public graft.

The president stated that Mr Obazee, who was controversially removed from office in 2017 by President Muhammadu Buhari after multiple charges including fraud and sexual assault of a federal official, should “immediately take steps to ensure the strengthening and probity of key Government Business Entities (GBEs), further block leakages in CBN and related GBEs, and provide a comprehensive report on public wealth currently in the hands of corrupt individuals and establishments.”

Mr Tinubu added in the letter that he would work with “a suitably experienced, competent, and capable team and work with relevant security and anti-corruption agencies to deliver on this assignment,” and that he would expect weekly updates from Mr Obazee’s team.

The development came about seven weeks after the president fired Godwin Emefiele as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and handed him over to the brutal State Security Service, where he has been held in defiance of court orders ever since.

    Jim Osayande Obazee baggages

Mr Tinubu, whose election as president is being challenged in federal court, did not appear to have taken Mr Obazee’s controversial background into account before appointing him to a critical anti-corruption portfolio.

Mr Jim Osayande Obazee was the executive secretary of the Financial Reporting Council when he was accused of sexually abusing a federal official, Abimbola Patricia Yakubu, in 2013 and later fired her from the federal agency in retaliation.

Ms Yakubu promptly filed a lawsuit against the FRC for wrongful termination and covering up sexual assault by its leadership, which she won in the Kano Division of the National Industrial Court.

After a lengthy trial, Justice Oyebiola Oyewunmi awarded Ms Yakubu N5 million against Jim Osayande Obazee. The judge also ordered the victim’s immediate reinstatement with full payment of her salaries, including for the years she was absent from work due to the illegal termination, in the November 24, 2016 ruling.

The court determined that Mr Obazee’s treatment caused Ms Yakubu “unquantifiable mental and psychological trauma, low self-worth, and dignity.”

“I award the sum of N5,000,000.00 against the 2nd defendant for sexually harassing the claimant, discrimination against her, inhuman and executive recklessness on the part of the 2nd defendant, thereby creating a hostile working environment for the claimant and for the violation of her human dignity and self-worth-respect,” the judge ruled.

Following the verdict, Mr Jim Osayande Obazee maintained his innocence on all charges. But there was no immediate word on whether or not he planned to appeal. The special investigator did not respond to a Peoples Gazette request for comment on his background.

Jim Osayande Obazee Accused of Embezzlement.

Mr Obazee was also accused in 2016 of syphoning public funds from the agency into his pocket, years after allegedly taking bribes to recommend a federal takeover of some banks and the removal of Lamido Sanusi, the CBN governor.

Mr Obazee, who was appointed to lead the FRC in November 2010, was finally fired by Mr Buhari in January 2017. His removal was the result of widespread outrage over his decision to strictly regulate churches, mosques, and other faith-based entities across Nigeria. The development was said to be related to Enoch Adeboye’s decision to step down as the leader of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. Later, the church denied any involvement in Mr Obazee’s removal.

A request for comment on how Mr Obazee was vetted for the position was not returned by a spokesman for the president.

    Tinubu and Corrupt People

Mr Tinubu, who has been dogged by allegations of corruption and drug dealing for decades, has kept close ties with people of questionable character. Femi Gbajabiamila, his chief of staff, accepted bribes to pass a 2021 law and had previously been sentenced for stealing money from clients while practising law in the United States. Abdullahi Ganduje, the president’s key political ally, was caught on video accepting bribes from a public works contractor.

Mr Tinubu has maintained his denial of corruption allegations, despite admitting to forfeiting drug money to the US in the 1990s. In his letter to Mr Obazee, he stated that his decision to appoint a special investigator was consistent with his administration’s efforts to eradicate corruption in government.

Tribunal Won’t Overturn Bola Tinubu’s Victory, Economist Intelligence Unit Predicts

Affirms Peter Obi will emerge formidable force in 2027.

The Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) predicts that President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the presidential election on February 25 will not be overturned by the courts.

The EIU, which predicted Tinubu would win the presidential election, also predicted in its most recent report that Mr. Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), would emerge as a formidable force in 2027.

Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared the winner of the last presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Tinubu defeated the other 17 candidates who ran in the election. He was victorious with a total of 8,794,726 votes.INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who announced the final results, stated that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, came in second place with a total of 6,984,520 votes in the election.

Obi finished third with 6,101,533 votes, while Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria’s People Party (NNPP) finished fourth with 1,496,687 votes.Tinubu’s victory is being challenged by both Atiku and Obi in the Presidential Election Petitions Court.

Tinubu was predicted to win the presidential election by EIU prior to the 2023 general election. The EIU noted in its latest report, released over the weekend, that the LP’s presidential candidate, Obi, would emerge as a formidable force in 2027, pointing out that the court would not overturn Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 presidential election.

“Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, won the presidential election in February with only 36.6 percent of the vote.” The decision is being challenged in court, but EIU does not believe it will be overturned. “Mr. Tinubu prioritised winning the Muslim north, and calls for secession from the Christian-majority south will grow louder,” according to the EIU’s latest report.

According to the report, Tinubu came to power in May after winning 37% of the vote in a February election with a 27% turnout.Tinubu took over from Muhammadu Buhari, his predecessor from the same party, the APC, according to EIU.According to the report, Tinubu has overcome his low popularity to launch a campaign of market reform on a scale and intensity that is virtually unprecedented in Nigerian history.

“He has deregulated the foreign-exchange market and petrol pricing, reforms that will result in a stronger economy in the medium to long run but will cause consumers short-term pain.” Due to a small fiscal footprint, the ability to protect households from rising prices is limited. In a country already grappling with multiple security crises fueled by high unemployment (a third of the workforce in 2020, according to the most recent official data) and widespread poverty, the prospect of mass unrest poses a significant risk to both the smooth implementation of reforms and the government’s ability to survive its first term. When Mr. Tinubu took office in May, inflation was 22.6 percent, and it is expected to rise sharply in 2023 and 2024. “As the president’s political capital dwindles, EIU expects his reform agenda to lose steam,” according to the report.

“The APC won a majority in the upper house as well as the most seats in the lower house.” Nigerian politics is fluid, with party affiliations often motivated by political expediency rather than ideology. Support for Peter Obi of the fringe Labour Party in the presidential election demonstrated dissatisfaction with the two-party system. With union support, he will undoubtedly raise the party’s profile and make it a more formidable force ahead of the next election in 2027′, the EIU added.

EIU, founded in 1946, forecasts global economic trends, political forces, and industry developments. They combine data, analysis, and forecasting to help businesses and policymakers make informed decisions.

Breaking: Tinubu Appoints Special Investigator To Probe CBN

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken a significant step in the fight against corruption by appointing a Special Investigator to probe the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and key Government Business Entities (GBEs). The suspended Governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele, is currently under detention at the office of the Department of State Services (DSS).

In an official letter obtained by Ejes Gist News, President Tinubu named Jim Osayande Obazee, the Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), as the special investigator for the CBN. This appointment takes immediate effect, and Obazee is directed to report directly to the President’s office.

The mandate for the investigation is to ensure the strengthening and probity of key Government Business Entities, block leakages in the CBN and related GBEs, and provide a comprehensive report on public wealth currently in the hands of corrupt individuals and establishments, whether private or public.

To carry out the investigation, Obazee is expected to collaborate with a competent and experienced team and work closely with relevant security and anti-corruption agencies. The President has requested weekly briefings on the progress made during this crucial assignment.

Moreover, on June 9, 2023, President Tinubu issued a directive suspending Godwin Emefiele from his position as the Governor of the CBN.

APC calls for the arrest of Catholic Bishop John Onaiyekan for criticizing Tinubu, says ‘only God can remove Tinubu as President

During a press conference held in Kaduna, the Confederation of All APC Support Groups, a pro-Bola Tinubu support group in the All Progressives Congress (APC), stated that only God has the power to unseat President Bola Tinubu as Nigeria’s president.

The press briefing was organized in response to criticism from Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, His Eminence, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, who reportedly questioned Tinubu’s presidency until the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal’s verdict.

    John Onaiyekan should be arrested

Muhammad Kialani, the Director-General of the support group, demanded the arrest of the cleric, expressing disappointment that John Onaiyekan, who should be advocating for love and peace, was allegedly acting as an agent to destabilize Nigeria. Kialani urged Nigerians to disregard the Christian leader’s statements.

The group condemned Onaiyekan’s remarks, particularly since they believe President Tinubu represents the Yoruba people, and they feel the cleric’s criticism is unfounded, considering the support Tinubu received from Yoruba voters during the election.

The support group emphasized that Nigerians have spoken through their votes during the presidential election on February 25, 2023, and they firmly believe that only God can remove President Tinubu from office. They called on all Nigerians not to support the alleged move to challenge Tinubu’s presidency.

The decision, delivered by Justice Abdulfatah Lawal, comes after a decade-long legal battle over the control and management of assets within OTL, favoring Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, the widow of the late Ojukwu, and her two children, Afamefuna and Nwachukwu.

The dispute arose following an alleged attempt by the defendants, including OTL and other individuals, to seize the claimants’ residence at No. 29 Oyinkan Abayomi Drive, Ikoyi, Lagos, along with several other properties in Lagos that were under the late Biafran warlord’s control.

The court’s ruling, delivered on June 24, emphasized the claimants’ status as biological children of the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, establishing their rightful entitlement to their father’s estate and his interests in OTL.

Justice Lawal stressed the principles of equity and fairness, ensuring the claimants’ possession and control of the specified properties and restraining the defendants from interfering with their rights.

The judge dismissed the counterclaim filed by the defendants for lack of competence and acknowledged the longstanding conduct of the 1st defendant in allowing the claimants’ family to reside on and derive income from the company’s assets over the years.

As a result of the ruling, the claimants are now entitled to the possession and occupation of the properties listed in the suit, including No. 29 Oyinkan Abayomi Drive, Ikoyi, Lagos, until the management of OTL’s assets is harmonized. Furthermore, the threat of forceful ejection from the property by the defendants has been deemed illegal.

This verdict marks a significant resolution in the complex legal battle over the late Ojukwu’s estate, securing the rightful rights and interests of the widow and children in the valuable assets formerly controlled by their father.

Shehu Sani urges senators not to confirm El-Rufai

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani, has appealed to Senators of the 10th Assembly not to approve the nomination of Malam Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, as a Minister.

In a statement he released on Sunday and shared with journalists, the former lawmaker expressed his astonishment that El-Rufai’s name appeared on the list as a ministerial nominee, considering his evident religious bias, which he believes poses a threat to the unity of the nation.

He urged the three senators from Kaduna State to stand with integrity and reject the confirmation and approval of the former governor, keeping in mind the nation’s future.

Senator Sani reminded his colleagues to honor the 2008 Senator Sodangi Committee’s decision, which had disqualified El-Rufai from holding any public office.
