2023: Why Igbos may never produce president of Nigeria – Bishop Azubuike

Athan Azubuike, the Presiding Bishop of the House of God International Church, has claimed that the Igbos will always be second best and may never produce a president of Nigeria, even if they have everything it takes to lead the country in 2023.

This was said by the cleric at an Owerri event for young clergy.

He insisted that the average Igbo man is a trader rather than a politician because they lack the skills to mobilize people on a grassroots level.

“One thing about an Igbo man is that the average Igbo person is a trader who is only interested in making money; we do not want to work,” he said. The grassroots are uninteresting to us. Igbo politicians will begin visiting churches in remote villages once elections are a few months away; this is the sense of a trader, not a politician.”

“Let me be blunt with everyone as to why Igbos may never produce a president but play second fiddle by asking who is coming out of Igbo land?” You’ll tell me it’s Rochas Okorocha, Anyim Pius Anyim, Sam Ohuabunwa, and others, but how many times have you seen Pius and others in Imo State since he became Senate President? “The presidency is not a municipal election.”

“Today, people are talking about the 2023 presidential election, and I’m wondering what those Igbo politicians who claim to be interested in the race have been doing to galvanize the grassroots,” he said.

“Why is it that an Igbo man is only interested in meeting people a few months before an election?” he continued. It’s complete nonsense. If Mezie Imo Clergy Forum’s program today were held in Yoruba land or the North, this place would be packed with great personalities, but that is not the case here.”

” Before displaying his ambition, a good politician works. An Igbo man is a trader, not a politician because a good politician works before galvanizing for election.”

“Even before now, as a presidential candidate, you must move around, broaden your horizons, and coordinate with other zones.”
