Two Chinese expatriates who were working on the ongoing Zungeru Hydro Electric Power Dam project in Niger State were kidnapped.

When armed kidnappers stormed the site and carried out their activity, one other Chinese national was shot and two of their security guards were killed, according to our source.

Workers were working on the connection of a high tension extension from Zungeru Dam to Gusase community in Shiroro Local Government Area of the state when the incident occurred on Tuesday evening.

According to our source, armed men arrived on motorcycles at the construction site, shooting sporadically to frighten the workers and carry out the mission unabated.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing kidnappers with sophisticated weapons carrying out their mission while people scurried to safety.

“The sudden appearance of the armed kidnappers with their highly sophisticated weapons stunned us; we were confused and didn’t know what to do or say.”

He went on to say that one of the Chinese workers was shot and two of their internal security guards were killed, and that the kidnappers fled with two more Chinese workers.

The number of people kidnapped could not be determined at the time of filing this report because many people, including Chinese expatriates, were said to have fled into the bush.

“I can’t say much more for the time being because many people have just run into the bush and we don’t know where they are.”

When contacted by phone, Ibrahim Matane, the Secretary to the Niger State Government, confirmed the incident but declined to provide further details, stating that he had yet to be briefed on the incident.

“Yes, I can confirm that the incident occurred, but we have yet to receive information on the number of people involved, and until we do, we won’t be able to say exactly how many.”
