Four families have been told of the death of their relatives at the Mobile Police Barracks in Sokoto, according to a source close to the families of the victims of the attack on the military installation at Burkusuma camp in Sabon Birni local government area of Sokoto state.
Families of the affected personnel at the barracks, according to the source, are now mourning their deceased relatives.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Sanusi Abubakar, the Sokoto state command’s public relations officer, said he was unaware of the attack.
The spokesperson for the Nigerian Army’s 8th Division in Sokoto said he couldn’t comment on the incidents.
However, security sources told TVCNEWS that seventeen people were killed in the attack and that several people are still missing.
According to a source, the attack killed four police officers, three Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps men, and seven Nigeria Army personnel.
When contacted, a spokesman for the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps’ Sokoto state command said that only the military could comment on the incident.
Burkusuma is a border community in the Sabon Birni local government area that has seen several attacks by suspected bandits that have resulted in the deaths of several people and forced others to flee to the neighbouring Niger Republic.
Garba Moyi, the Sokoto State Commissioner for Carriers and Security Matters, confirmed the attack on the military base earlier but did not specify the number of casualties.
